Get Your License
I get a lot of e-mails about how to become a cosmetologist, esthetician, makeup artist, etc. and if you’re not sure where to start….you’re not alone!
Getting your cosmetology license requires credit hours at a reputable institution or apprenticeship, testing, and more. Requirements for getting your license vary from state to state, so make sure you do research for the state you want to work in.
💋Before you get started
Make lists, think hard, and ask questions!
What led you to pursue cosmetology as a career? Are you considering it for your career, or are you doing it because you think it’s quick, easy, and pays off?
Cosmetology and other industries like healthcare, public services, etc. are more than just a job. People like me and other professionals do it because we care, and we truly want to improve the lives of others. We make personal sacrifices, work unusual hours, and everyone that comes to us needs a problem solved….of various sorts.
If you don’t plan on attempting to make someones day brighter…everyday…all day…then maybe you should explore other options first. It saddens me to see a hairstylist just going through the motions, carrying pitifully forced conversations with clients that really need them to listen. Most of those stylists give really bad haircuts too.
If you want to get your cosmetology license the first step is to research schooling and licensing requirements. Even if you think you’re set on which field you want to go in, do a little reading about different careers in cosmetology so you’ll know what you’re getting into.
Some of your options are:
- Cosmetology (Includes hair, nails, & more.)
- Nail Technician
- Massage Therapy
Connect with other future professionals and cosmetologists to learn more about what a career in the beauty industry is all about!
There’s nothing like hearing the best and the worst of stories from those that have seen it all!
