How-Often-Should-I-Color-My-HairHow often should I color my hair? It’s a common question that my clients and readers ask and everyone wants to know for different reasons. Some are trying to save money, and some just want their hair to look tip-top all the time.

Here’s what you need to know to maintain your hair color on a schedule that fits you and your budget!

How Often Should I Color My Hair?

How often you color your hair depends on the technique that was used to color your hair initially, how fast your hair grows, and how different the colored hair is from your natural hair. There can be other factors, but these are the main points.

You can color your hair as little as every 2 weeks if needed. People who do that are a more rare case because they probably have brown hair, but color their hair very light blonde and want to maintain the look at all times.

You can wait as long as 2-4 months if you want to spend less on hair appointments and the demarcation line isn’t too drastic.

The length of time does not matter as long as the color application is done properly. Color should not be applied from roots to ends every time (especially if lightening). It should be applied to the regrowth and the rest of the hair should be refreshed with the proper method if needed.

Here are the lengths of time between color appointments that I recommend for different color services:

  • Highlights- Every 4 to 8 weeks
  • All-over lightening- Every 3 to 5 weeks
  • All-over color (within 2 shades of natural level)- Every 4 to 8 weeks
  • All-over color (to cover gray hair)- Every 3 to 5 weeks
  • Gray blending (usually high & low lights)- Every 4 to 8 weeks
  • Demi-permanent color- Every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Semi-permanent color- Every 2 to 4 weeks
  • Block coloring (varying types of color used)- Depends on technique and color products used.

  1. I am debating whether or not I want to get a new hair color, but I just got my hair dyed two months ago. You list all-over color as needing to be redone every 4 to 8 weeks. However, my hair is dyed red and not near my natural level. How do I find out when the right time would be for me to dye my hair again?

Having your hair color retouched is different than changing your hair color. It depends on the look you want to go for.

You can change it anytime depending on the porosity of your hair and/or the damage level. Of course, if you want something light then it’s not possible to do safely in one step.
